Necks & Barrels
A barrel or neck upgrade is the most impactful acoustic improvement a player can make without changing their instrument. Both components sit at the critical junction between the player's air and the instrument's body — the point where tone character, intonation and response are shaped before the sound wave travels anywhere else. The right barrel or neck opens up tone, improves evenness across registers and gives a playing experience that feels fundamentally different from the factory component.
At Wind Instrument Proshop we carry one of the most comprehensive barrel and neck selections available in Canada.
CLARINET BARRELS
Backun — Five distinct models in grenadilla and cocobolo. The Fatboy for focused controlled versatility. The MoBa for orchestral depth and resistance. The Lumière for sweetness and projection. The Essence for centered warm tone across a wide size range. The Eb Cutback for soprano clarinet players who want to use standard Bb reeds without trimming. The deepest Backun barrel selection available from any Canadian retailer.
Chedeville Kaspar CB1 — The only hard-anodized aluminum clarinet barrel in the world. Hourglass bore design, maximum projection, lighter than wood and dimensionally stable in any climate.
Rice Clarinet Works — Ringless grenadilla and Delrin barrels for Bb and A clarinet. Reverse taper bore for focused tone and smoother intonation. Developed with Chris Hill, Principal Clarinet of the South Dakota Symphony.
Royal Global Polaris Adjustable — Patented center ring design adjustable from 64–68mm with no tenon gap. Fits Buffet, Selmer, Yamaha and Backun. The solution to pulling out your barrel to tune.
Clark Fobes HDP — High-density polymer. Never changes size or shape regardless of temperature or humidity. 64–67mm. The most practical barrel for Canadian players performing in variable conditions.
Uversa World Pagoda — Exotic stable wood in M6S, M7, M7S and Eb Granadilla. Precision bore, focused tone and superior resonance.
SAXOPHONE NECKS
KB Sax — Handcrafted by Kim Bock in New York using his patented mirror-twin build process — the only neck manufacturing method that guarantees even wall thickness throughout. Even wall thickness means even response from low Bb to the highest altissimo. No other neck maker uses this process.
Alto necks: Vanguard (Selmer SBA-inspired, centered and focused) and Canyon (Mark VI buzz and colorful expressiveness in M61 brass).
Tenor necks: Redwood (hand-hammered copper, Selmer Balanced Action and Conn 10M character), Vanguard (SBA-inspired precision, shaped with Ben Wendel's input) and Canyon (early Mark VI buzz in M61 brass).
