Ligatures
What if a ligature could change your sound? Is a Ligature placebo or does is affect your sound in a meaningful way? The ligature is the most underestimated component in a woodwind player's setup. Most players use whatever came with their mouthpiece — a basic two-screw metal band — without ever questioning whether it is limiting their sound. The truth is that it could be.The ligature's job is to hold the reed to the mouthpiece. But how it holds the reed determines how freely the reed vibrates, and reed vibration is the source of the entire sound. A well-designed ligature allows you to play with more confidence producing a fuller, richer, more responsive sound from the same mouthpiece and reed combination. Ligatures act like low and high-pass filters in an audio circuit subtly modifying the different modes of reed vibration. The contact points, the material, the pressure distribution and the design philosophy all affect what the player hears. We carry a carefully curated selection of premium ligatures for saxophone and clarinet.
The ligature upgrade is one of the first upgrades most woodwind players make. Unlike a mouthpiece or instrument purchase, a premium ligature is a small investment that immediately and measurably changes what the player hears. If you have never tried a well-designed ligature on your current mouthpiece — start here. Every ligature ships across Canada.
