Description
Most ligatures hold the reed down with direct pressure — metal against rubber, contact points sitting right where the reed needs to vibrate. The JLV takes a different approach entirely. The reed contact plate floats, touching the reed only at four small corner points, leaving the rest of the vamp free to move. The result is a reed that vibrates over its full length rather than being pinched in the middle. You hear it immediately — more resonance, a richer harmonic spread, and a sound that's more centred and alive.
There's a practical side to this too. Reeds warp. The floating plate moves with the reed's surface, compensating for small deformations and sealing air leaks that would otherwise kill response or tone. Reeds you might have put aside start playing again. That alone is worth paying attention to.
The position of the plate along the reed changes the character of the sound — further forward gives a more focused, compact tone; further back opens it up and adds warmth. One ligature, adjustable to different sounds depending on what the music calls for.
This is a 100% handcrafted French ligature, designed by professional saxophonist Jean-Luc Vignaud after nearly a decade of research. The engineering is meticulous and the build quality shows it. It works on both classic and jazz ebonite mouthpieces for alto, soprano, tenor, and baritone saxophone, and fits left- or right-handed players — the plate is reversible.
Includes the ligature and tightening tool. Pair it with the François Louis Smart Cap to complete the setup.
