Description
The Otto Link Tone Edge is one of the most recorded mouthpieces in jazz history. Stan Getz, Michael Brecker, Chris Potter, Bob Reynolds — the list of players who built their sound around a hard rubber Link is long and deep. The problem, for decades, has been consistency. Two mouthpieces off the same production run could play and feel entirely different from each other, leaving players sorting through stacks of pieces to find the one that worked.
That's what this partnership changes. The Tone Edge hard rubber mouthpiece starts production at JJ Babbitt using their traditional molding process, original molds, and proprietary hard rubber formulation — the same process that's defined the Link sound since the Florida era. That blank is then sent to Theo Wanne's facility, where the tip opening, side rails, baffle, reed window, and table are all machined on high-end CNC equipment to tight tolerances, and fitted with a perfectly flat table. We had the opportunity to Visit the Theo Wanne Factory in Bellingham and witness the mouthpieces being made. It was absolutely incredible. The result is a mouthpiece that plays like the best Link you've ever found, every time, right out of the box.
The Tone Edge is warm, full-bodied, and deeply resonant, with a thick core that holds together across the full range of the instrument. It plays smooth and round at soft dynamics, then responds with clarity and presence when pushed. Within the Otto Link x Wanne lineup, the Tone Edge sits alongside the darker New York and Super Tone Master models and the brighter Florida, making it the mid-range option for players who want the iconic Link core sound with modern response and reliability.
