A mouthpiece cap seems like a simple thing — put it on, take it off, protect the tip. The François Louis Smart Cap does all of that, but it solves a problem most caps ignore entirely.

Standard caps sit over the ligature, which means every time you switch ligatures you're hunting for a different cap or forcing a poor fit. The Smart Cap works differently. Two flexible arms grip the mouthpiece directly, with rubber extensions that hold it securely regardless of what ligature is underneath. One cap, every mouthpiece, every ligature. It just works.

The felt pad inside is the other thing that sets it apart. Wet it before a gig, a rehearsal, or a long doubling session and the cap becomes a humidity source — keeping your reed from drying out while the horn sits between tunes. In Calgary's dry climate that's not a small thing. A reed that dries out between sets plays differently when you pick it back up. A reed that stays humid plays the same way it did when you put it down.

It also protects the tip rail of the mouthpiece, which is where expensive mouthpieces get damaged. A knocked-over stand or a dropped case can chip or warp a tip rail in an instant. The Smart Cap covers it.
