Description
Good jazz alto tone used to mean hunting through boxes of vintage Meyer mouthpieces hoping to find a great one. The Select Jazz was built to change that. D'Addario mills each piece from solid rod hard rubber using CNC machining — no molding, no hand finishing, no variation between pieces. You order one and you know exactly what you're getting.
The sound lands in classic jazz territory: warm and full through the middle, with a strong core that carries well in a room. It doesn't push you toward bright or dark — it sits in that balanced place where the tone is yours to shape. The low end speaks easily, the altissimo register is cleaner than you'd expect, and intonation holds steady across the whole horn without fighting you.
The medium chamber and medium facing give you a setup that's forgiving without being bland. Reeds that are even slightly off still work, which matters for players who gig regularly and don't always have time to sort through a full box before a show. That reed-friendliness also makes it a good choice for students — less fighting the equipment, more time actually playing.
It comes in tip openings from D5 through D8, so you can match it to your embouchure and the kind of playing you do. Smaller openings suit players who want more resistance and control; larger ones open things up for a bigger, looser sound. All sizes use the same medium chamber, so the core character stays consistent across the line.
Made in the USA. Comparable in feel to a quality vintage Meyer, but at a fraction of the cost and with none of the inconsistency. A straightforward, no-nonsense jazz mouthpiece that works.
