Description
Jerry Bergonzi is one of the most distinctive tenor voices in jazz — a player with a sound so personal and fully developed that it's immediately recognizable. When Aaron Drake and Bergonzi set out to build a mouthpiece together, they didn't start from scratch. They started from Jerry's own Early Babbitt "EB" — the vintage mouthpiece he'd played for years — and spent two years refining every element until the design captured exactly what he was looking for.
The classic crescent-shaped baffle transitions into a recalibrated floor contour and ultimately into a large round chamber. That combination produces the warmth, depth, and body that a large chamber is known for, while the carefully shaped baffle and floor contour add focus and a natural projection that keeps the sound present without pushing brightness. The tip and side rails are finished to Jerry's exact specifications — a slightly wider contour that generates thickness and stability in both the tone and the attack.
The result is a mouthpiece built around a player's real, specific preferences rather than a general market category. That specificity translates into something players can hear and feel immediately.
"What I look for in a mouthpiece is the ability to shape the sound that I hear in my head with the ease of articulation. Drake's mouthpieces do that for me." — Jerry Bergonzi
