It's a brass collar that slips over the base of the mouthpiece just below the cup and locks in place with a small nylon-tipped set screw. The added mass at that specific point improves feedback and slotting, giving notes a more defined, centred feel under the chops. Players who've struggled with a mouthpiece that feels vague or difficult to lock into pitch often notice the difference immediately.
