Description
The Eb clarinet has a reputation for being difficult to control in the high register — sharp, unpredictable, and demanding a collection of awkward alternate fingerings just to stay in tune. The Vocalise Eb was designed specifically to address that. Richard Hawkins worked with Backun to build a mouthpiece that makes the upper register genuinely playable, reducing the need for complex workarounds and letting you focus on making music instead of managing the horn.
The mouthpiece is milled from solid hard rod rubber on a nine-axis CNC machine using a done-in-one program that combines milling and lathing in a single setup. No recalibration between processes means no accumulated tolerances, no variation between pieces. Every Vocalise Eb plays exactly the way the design specifies — consistent in ways that hand-finished mouthpieces simply can't guarantee.
The tone is clear and centred, with the kind of even response across registers that the Eb clarinet doesn't always cooperate with. Intonation is stable and predictable, which matters enormously on an instrument where a slightly off note in the upper register can cut right through an ensemble. Players who have struggled with the Eb's high end find that the Vocalise changes the experience entirely.
Available in G and H facings. The G (1.24mm / 0.048") suits players who want a slightly more resistant, controlled feel. Ligature not included — pairs naturally with the Backun Eb Cutback Barrel for a complete, well-matched setup.
