Fliphead
The transverse flute has one of the steepest learning curves of any wind instrument. The embouchure alone — the precise angle of airstream across the embouchure hole that produces tone — takes months to develop reliably. For a saxophonist or clarinetist who needs to double on flute for a gig, a theatre pit or a school band part, those months of embouchure development are months they don't have. For a student with braces, the conventional transverse embouchure can be genuinely painful. For a folk or world music player who wants the chromatic range of a Boehm flute with the character of an Irish low whistle, no conventional headjoint exists.
Fliphead solves all three of these problems with one revolutionary design.
Axel Müller founded Fliphead in 2021. Axel is a well-known professional saxophonist and woodwind player who tours and records all over central Europe. He invented the Fliphead alternative flute headjoint to give saxophone players a simple solution for playing flute without having to dedicate years to developing a flute embouchure. His solution is a specially designed mouthpiece that is as easy to play as a recorder or an Irish low whistle. Two years of intense development, prototyping and performance testing yielded an accessible product fit for beginners and established players alike.
The Fliphead replaces the standard transverse headjoint on any C flute, allowing the instrument to be played in a vertical position in front of the body. The full chromatic range of the flute is available. All standard Boehm fingerings apply. The only thing that changes is the mouthpiece — and with it, the entire barrier to entry.
At Wind Instrument Proshop we are one of the very few Canadian retailers carrying Fliphead products. For any local purchases we include a free tenon fitting by our certified repair technician — ensuring the headjoint fits your specific flute.
